Every beach town sets its own rules, and they change. Here’s what we’ve confirmed from official sources, and where to check the rest.
No e-bikes on the beach

Town of Oak Island Ordinance 28-5 prohibits electric assist bicycles on public beach areas at any time of year, including Lockwood Folly Inlet and The Point. Ride the roads and leave the sand for walking.

Ocean Isle Beach

- Beach and street rules are set by the Town of Ocean Isle Beach. Check them before riding anywhere other than roads.
Holden Beach

- The town’s ordinance summary says cyclists must follow the same laws as motor vehicles, including stop signs, and anyone under 16 must wear a helmet.
- It restricts driving motorized vehicles on the beach to emergency and government vehicles.
Caswell Beach

- Caswell Beach is a separate town from Oak Island with its own ordinances. Check its current rules before riding anywhere other than roads.
Southport

- Southport is on the mainland, so riding here is on streets. Yield to people on foot, especially along the waterfront.
Everywhere you ride
- Follow traffic laws. Stop at stop signs and yield to pedestrians.
- Wear the helmet we provide. North Carolina requires riders under 16 to wear a helmet on public roads, paths and rights-of-way.
- Keep the bikes out of the ocean and away from water. Electric bikes and salt water don’t mix.
- Use public beach accesses on foot, and never walk through the dunes.
- Lock the bike whenever you park it.
